There you have IT. A simple design for a digital video recorder with a Digital Terrestrial Video receiver. It uses some pretty standard and trusted name brands like RealTek, Hynix, Philips that make up the component parts.

You’ll notice that the Playon features only a single SATA connector and the frame is only designed for a single drive. It would have been nice for the unit to be designed to accept the 2.5-inch drives and squeeze two into the same box. The 3.5-inch drives will still be the best bang for buck and as it only has a single drive bay you best consider getting the largest capacity that the Playon DVR. Having space for 2 x 2.5-inch drives and having RAID capability would have offered to users a lower power consumption, low noise and heat level for users looking for 24×7 super quiet operation.

Take note that unit had only a single cooling fan and that might get people a little worried. The fan operation is quiet and as such it is adequate for cooling the Playon even with the USB Wireless LAN plugged in. Just don’t go piling stuff around or on top of the device that would prevent normal and natural airflow.
